1. LOGGERS TAPE
Have you ever tried to measure a long log by yourself? It’s a one-man job that isn’t so easy when you don’t have the right tools. This is where Loggers Tape comes in extremely handy. Loggers tape comes equipped with a nail end that you poke into the log, so that you’re able to measure it by yourself. When you give it a little tug, the loggers tape will automatically recoil. By using one side of the loggers tape, you can measure the length of the log. The other side will help you measure the diameter. Most Loggers Tape has other features as well, such as a swivel belt clip, a sturdy case, and an open reel design. Loggers tape comes in a variety of lengths, but we recommend one that measures at least 50 feet.
2. LOG SCALE
Sawyers need to be able to measure the volume of a log before it’s cut to help them determine the board foot volume of a log. (Board foot is equal to a 12-inch x 12-inch board that is 1-inch thick.) The tools that a sawyer needs to do this includes a log scale and a loggers tape. Doyle makes a log scale that contains 3 scales in one, which comes in handy for selling logs. The Doyle log scale also helps you get accurate board footage of log lengths that are anywhere from 8 to 20 feet.
3. CANT HOOK
A cant hook is an essential tool that help sawyers turn, pivot, and move logs with greater ease. Sawyers use cant hooks to load wood into a vehicle, stack logs in a pile, roll logs, or control the movement of a log as it goes through the sawmill. On one end of a cant hook there is a slip grip for holding on to and then a moveable metal toe hook on the other end that’s used to grip the log. These tools come in a variety of sizes and materials.
4. PICKAROON
A pickaroon is another tool that enables sawyers to more easily handle logs. This tool works especially well for picking up small logs and carrying them to another location. Sawyers also use pickaroons for dragging smaller logs or larger branches. Traditionally, pickaroons have a wooden handle with a sharp, metal point on the other end. This log handling tool is considered a back saver for sawyers.
There are many reasons a sawyer would need to make marks on rough sawn boards and other types of lumber. Some sawyers get by with using chalk or crayons, but lumber crayons work much better as they are specifically made for marking up wood. Lumber crayons will also last much longer than regular crayons, plus they won’t melt in high temperatures. They come in a variety of colors and work well on green lumber, dry wood, and even other materials like concrete and metal. This might actually be the best gift ever to a dad from their child!
6. END SEALER
This product is a clear finish that’s used to protect exposed log ends from deterioration. Using end sealer prevents end checks and drying splits. It can be used on hardwood and softwood lumber and also on debarked logs and woodturning blanks. End sealer comes in both a winter and summer formula.
Sometimes sawyers need to just take a simple measurement of a log, board, or other material. For this reason, they should have a regular tape measure close by at all times. The best tape measures are durable, accurate, and have a good clip design. Tape measures should also be easy to read and hook easily on the top and bottom. It’s an added bonus if you can throw the tape blade at a fairly far distance.
Sawyers use various types of machinery and equipment that needs regular maintenance. Sometimes things need to be take apart and put back together. For these reasons a sawyer will always need a good crescent wrench. Whether sawyers need crescent wrenches for gripping, tightening and loosening nuts and bolts, this is one tool a sawyer just can’t go without.
9. LEVELS
Every sawyer will use a level at one time or another. This measuring tool will help you determine whether a surface is a true vertical or horizontal. Having various sizes of levels is optimal, which is why every sawyer needs a few of them that are either 24-inches, 48-inches, or 72-inches.
10. GREASE GUN
A grease gun is a basic tool that’s needed to grease the band wheels when you change the blade. There are also other parts of the sawmill that will need lubrication, such as the roller guide bearing as well as multiple bearings and gears.
11. CALIPER
A caliper helps to measure the diameter at breast height of a tree. The technical definition for the word caliper is the diameter of the tree trunk. A tree that measures 4-inches in diameter or smaller is measured 6 inches above the soil line. A tree that measures over 4-inches is measured one foot from the soil line. A caliper generally has two adjustable arms that make measuring easier.
12. VICE GRIP (Locking Pliers)
Sawyers often work along but it can be nice at times to have an extra set of hands, and a vice grip is almost like having just that. A vice grip makes it possible to temporarily hold on to small objects or provide the ability to clamp something quickly. Some sawyers even use this tool for pounding in nails when they don’t have a hammer nearby.
